The Parable of the Sower

A few years ago, I found myself in Iowa during planting season. As I drove through the countryside, I saw farmers carefully tending their fields, planting row after row of corn. But I also noticed that not all seeds had the same fate. Some scattered onto the road, where birds quickly ate them. Others fell into a gully or among weeds, unable to take root or grow. But the seeds that landed in the carefully prepared fields—the ones that were nurtured and watered—grew tall and strong, just as they say: “Knee high by the Fourth of July.”

That experience stuck with me. It reminded me how important environment and care are to growth, whether it’s in farming or real estate. Just like seeds, agents have incredible potential to grow and succeed, but their outcomes depend on where they’re “planted” and how they’re nurtured.

At Keller Williams, we believe in fostering an environment where agents can thrive, aligned with our values of God, Family, and then Business. This value system provides a framework for building not just successful careers but meaningful lives. The Parable of the Sower, as told in Matthew 13:1-23, offers a perfect metaphor for what it takes to succeed in real estate.

Matthew 13 :  1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a]

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Growth Doesn’t Happen by Accident — It Happens With Intention

This story highlights how preparation, environment, and care make all the difference in achieving growth.

For me, it perfectly parallels the journey real estate agents go through in building their careers.

The Seeds Along the Path: Without Direction, Growth Stalls

In the parable, some seeds fell on the path and were eaten by birds before they had a chance to grow.
In real estate, this reminds me of agents who hear about the opportunity, get licensed, and enter the business—but without any guidance or clear direction, their potential is never realized.

Too often, new agents jump in with excitement but no plan.
They don’t know how to generate leads, manage a database, or turn conversations into closings.
Without a mentor or proven framework, they become overwhelmed and often exit the business before they’ve even truly started.

How I Address This:
I provide clear, structured training and coaching from day one. From foundational programs to personalized roadmaps, I help agents understand exactly what to do—and when to do it—to build early momentum and avoid common pitfalls. I believe no agent should feel like they’re navigating this alone.

The Seeds on Rocky Ground: Shallow Roots Can’t Withstand Pressure

Other seeds landed on rocky ground. They sprouted fast, but when the sun came out, they withered—because they didn’t have deep roots.

This is all too familiar in real estate.
Some agents start off hot—full of energy and early success—but when the market shifts, a deal falls apart, or rejection sets in, they burn out.
Momentum fades because the foundation wasn’t there.

How I Address This:
I focus on helping agents build durable systems and strong habits. Daily lead generation routines, time-blocking strategies, accountability, mindset work—these are the deep roots that allow agents to weather the inevitable challenges of this business. Real estate is not for the faint of heart. But with the right preparation, agents don’t just survive—they grow stronger with every season.

The Seeds Among Thorns: Distractions That Derail Progress

Some seeds fell among thorns, which choked them out.
For agents, those “thorns” are the distractions—trying to do everything, chasing every lead, being pulled in too many directions.

Without focus, it’s easy to become busy but not productive.
Agents get caught up in the noise—social media, shiny tools, or urgent-but-unimportant tasks—and lose track of what actually drives results.

How I Address This:
I help agents identify and stay committed to income-producing activities. We prioritize what matters most—conversations, appointments, contracts—and align those business goals with personal values. When you know your “why” and have a system to support your “how,” distractions lose their power.

The Seeds in Good Soil: The Right Environment Changes Everything

Finally, the seeds that fell on good soil produced a harvest—thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold.
This is what happens when agents are placed in the right environment, with the right support, surrounded by people who care about their growth.

This is my mission.
To be the good soil.
To create a space where agents feel valued, seen, and equipped to succeed—not just in business, but in life.

How I Address This:
I invest deeply in people. Through coaching, training, one-on-one mentorship, and group masterminds, I help agents build not just businesses—but belief. I foster a culture of collaboration and accountability, where agents don’t just learn from me—they grow with each other. Together, we sharpen our skills, share ideas, and build something that lasts.

Why This Matters to Me

The reason I started writing these messages wasn’t to market myself—it was to model what I teach.

I wanted my agents to see that I don’t just talk about staying in touch with your database—I do it.
I don’t just recommend building relationships—I invest in them.
Because real estate is more than transactions. It’s about people.

Culture isn’t something you say.
It’s something you show.
Through consistency. Through care. Through leadership by example.

Growth is a Shared Journey

Every agent has the potential to thrive. But potential doesn’t grow in a vacuum.
It needs clarity. Support. Accountability. Environment. And heart.

That’s what I strive to provide.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up your business, I’m here to help you grow—rooted in values, supported by systems, and surrounded by a community that cares.
