A few years ago, I found myself in Iowa during planting season. As I drove through the countryside, I saw farmers carefully tending their fields, planting row after row of corn. But I also noticed that not all seeds had the same fate. Some scattered onto the road, where birds quickly ate them. Others fell into a gully or among weeds, unable to take root or grow. But the seeds that landed in the carefully prepared fields—the ones that were nurtured and watered—grew tall and strong, just as they say: “Knee high by the Fourth of July.”

That experience stuck with me. It reminded me how important environment and care are to growth, whether it’s in farming or real estate. Just like seeds, agents have incredible potential to grow and succeed, but their outcomes depend on where they’re “planted” and how they’re nurtured.

At Keller Williams, we believe in fostering an environment where agents can thrive, aligned with our values of God, Family, and then Business. This value system provides a framework for building not just successful careers but meaningful lives. The Parable of the Sower, as told in Matthew 13:1-23, offers a perfect metaphor for what it takes to succeed in real estate.

Matthew 13 :  1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;
    though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
    you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
    they hardly hear with their ears,
    and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[a]

16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

This story highlights how preparation, environment, and care make all the difference in achieving growth.

For me, it’s a perfect parallel to the journey agents take in real estate.

The Seeds Along the Path: Without Direction, Growth Stalls

In the parable, some seeds fell on the path and were eaten by birds before they had a chance to grow. In real estate, this is like agents who hear about the opportunity but lack the support or direction to turn potential into performance.

For example, new agents often jump into the business with high hopes but no clear plan. They may not know where to start, how to generate leads, or even what steps to take to close their first deal. Without a guide or mentor, they’re left vulnerable to challenges and often leave the business before they’ve even started to grow.

How I Address This:
At KW Villages, we ensure agents have a strong foundation from the very beginning. Training programs like Ignite and tools like the Six Figure Income Playbook provide clear, actionable steps for new agents. Our one-on-one coaching and group sessions help agents feel supported and confident as they navigate their first deals.

The Seeds on Rocky Ground: Shallow Roots Can’t Withstand Pressure

The seeds that landed on rocky ground sprouted quickly but withered under the sun because they lacked deep roots. In real estate, this mirrors agents who start strong but burn out when challenges arise.

Real estate isn’t easy. Deals fall through, market conditions change, and rejection is part of the job. Without the right systems and support, it’s easy for agents to lose momentum and give up.

How I Address This:
At KW Villages, we focus on helping agents develop the habits and systems they need for long-term success. Whether it’s creating a daily lead generation routine, tracking progress with tools like the Phone Prospecting and Lead Generation Log, or building resilience through mindset training, we make sure agents have the “deep roots” needed to thrive.

The Seeds Among Thorns: Distractions That Derail Progress

In the parable, some seeds fell among thorns and were choked out. For agents, this happens when they’re overwhelmed by distractions or pulled in too many directions.

It’s easy to lose focus in real estate, especially when juggling lead generation, client relationships, and personal responsibilities. Sometimes, agents prioritize the wrong activities or chase quick wins, only to find themselves burned out or unproductive.

How I Address This:
Our culture at KW Villages is designed to help agents prioritize what matters most. By focusing on income-producing activities, creating accountability partnerships, and providing ongoing training, we help agents stay on track. We also emphasize work-life balance, aligning business goals with personal values so agents don’t feel torn between success and fulfillment.

The Seeds in Good Soil: The Right Environment Makes All the Difference

Finally, the seeds that landed in good soil produced an abundant harvest—some thirty, sixty, or even a hundredfold. This is what happens when agents are planted in the right environment and given the tools and care they need to grow.

At KW Villages, our mission is to create this “good soil” for agents. It’s about more than just providing training—it’s about fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and support. When agents feel valued and empowered, they’re able to achieve extraordinary results.

How I Address This:
From top-tier training to cutting-edge technology, we equip our agents with everything they need to succeed. Our collaborative culture ensures that agents learn from one another, share best practices, and grow together. As a Team Leader, I’m deeply invested in every agent’s success, working with them to set goals, overcome challenges, and unlock their full potential.

The Role of Values in Growth

The Parable of the Sower and my experience in Iowa remind me how critical the right environment and care are to growth. At KW Villages, we build on this principle by aligning everything we do with our values of God, Family, then Business.

These values guide how we support our agents, ensuring they grow not just professionally but personally. We believe that success in business is only meaningful when it’s part of a fulfilling life, grounded in strong relationships and a sense of purpose.

Cultivating Success: Growth is a Shared Journey

Just like the seeds in the Iowa fields, every real estate agent has the potential to grow and thrive. But that growth doesn’t happen by accident. It takes preparation, care, and the right environment to unlock potential and achieve lasting success.

At KW Villages, we’re committed to being the “good soil” where agents can plant themselves, grow deep roots, and produce a bountiful harvest. Whether you’re just starting your real estate career or looking to take it to the next level, we’re here to provide the training, tools, and support you need to flourish.
